Water Flow Meters: Complete Selection Guide for Industrial & Municipal Utilities

Quick Answer: Electromagnetic flow meters are the default choice for most industrial and municipal water lines from DN25 to DN1200. For retrofit jobs and large pipes without shutdown, clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters are fast and practical. How to Choose a Water Flow Meter in Practice

Start with line data. You need pipe size DN, flow range in m³/h, pressure bar, temperature °C, conductivity µS/cm, and solids content. That data removes most wrong options quickly.


Electromagnetic meters need conductive water. Potable water, wastewater, seawater, and process water usually pass the 5 µS/cm minimum. Pure water after reverse osmosis does not pass. In that case use an ultrasonic meter.


Because water quality varies by site, we often ask for a sample conductivity value first. If you do not have it, send the water source and treatment stage. We will sort it out with you.


Electromagnetic Flow Meters for Water and Wastewater

Silver Instruments electromagnetic flow meters cover DN15 to DN2000. Accuracy is 0.5 percent of reading and 0.2 percent is optional for custody transfer. Liners include hard rubber, PTFE, and PFA. Electrodes are 316L, Hastelloy C, or titanium.


For a DN300 drinking water line at 100 to 1600 m³/h, we quote a hard rubber liner with 316L electrodes and 4-20 mA HART output. For seawater intake, PTFE liner with titanium electrodes is the standard. A desalination plant in Saudi Arabia runs this setup on DN500 seawater feed lines at PN16.


Wastewater with sludge and small solids works well with electromagnetic meters. The full bore design has no moving parts and does not clog. A municipal plant in Chile replaced eight propeller meters with Silver Instruments electromagnetic meters on effluent lines. The meters report flow total and alarm status to SCADA.


Ultrasonic Flow Meters for Retrofit and Large Pipes

Clamp-on transit time ultrasonic flow meters fit DN15 to DN6000. They mount outside the pipe and need no cutting or shutdown. Pressure loss is zero. Accuracy is about 1 percent of reading for clean water. For dirty water with bubbles or solids above 100 ppm, use Doppler ultrasonic.


In practice, clamp-on meters serve temporary flow surveys and leak detection. A water utility in Malaysia used a portable clamp-on unit to verify six district metered zones before buying permanent electromagnetic meters. That field data helped them get capital approval.


Inline ultrasonic meters are also available for demineralized water and clean process water where a magmeter cannot operate.


Vortex Flow Meters for Hot Water and Cooling Loops

Vortex flow meters handle clean water and hot water up to 250 °C. They need a minimum flow velocity to form a stable vortex street. So they are not the best fit for wide turndown on municipal distribution lines. For a closed loop cooling water line at DN100 and 20 to 120 m³/h, a vortex meter with 4-20 mA HART works well.


Coriolis and Oval Gear Meters for Dosing and Small Flow

Water treatment plants inject chemicals at low flow rates. A Coriolis mass flow meter measures mass directly and handles acid, caustic, and polymer. Oval gear flow meters are a lower cost option for clean water, soft water, and fuel oil. They need a strainer upstream. Accuracy is 0.5 percent of rate. A food and beverage plant in Vietnam uses one for demineralized water batching.
